Description / Synopsis
This digital edition is reformatted from the work published as How food was given (Penticton, B.C. : Theytus Books, 1984, 1991, 2004, 2009). With two other works, How food was given formed the series Kou-Skelowh = We are the people, and the three were published variously as single titles and as combined volumes. The original publication was developed following Okanagan cultural protocol. The editorial note that appears in the 2009 edition describes how lengthy discussions with the Okanagan Elders Council that began in 1981 led to the legends being translated into English for the first edition published by Theytus in 1984. The Elders Council granted permission to publish the three legends for sale on the strict grounds that no individual would claim ownership of the legends or benefit from the sales. Kʷu sqilxʷ meaning “we are the people"" and literally “we are Indigenous” is, therefore, an “authorless” series copyrighted to the Okanagan Nation Alliance
